I received my B.F.A. from Cornell University and an M.A. in Art Education from Columbia University. Besides teaching art to high school students, I also designed rugs, and interiors and worked for about 6 years as a closet designer. In the 1980s I designed quilts for my mother-in-law who was an avid quilter and had made numerous quilts for all her grandchildren. I inherited her stash and sewing machine. In 2004 that machine died and when I bought one to replace it, I decided to put it to use by taking a quilting course. The first quilt I ever made was for my first granddaughter. Four more grandchildren within three years and I suddenly found myself a quilter. I soon began inventing my own patterns and about eight years ago, I bought a longarm to help enhance my quilting. I love experimenting with different media and techniques. I am especially influenced by color and repetitive pattern, combining them to form new insights and visual tension. It is the process of creating that excites and motivates me.. My solid color works allow to me delve into how color evokes emotion in the viewer. The opaque nature of the medium allows me to concentrate on boldness to command attention.. In creating fabrics to be used in whole cloth quilts, I work with thickened dyes, acrylic paints, silkscreens, stencils and discharge among numerous other materials and techniques. These afford me the opportunity to create new relationships. By using both opaque and transparent areas I can add depth and focus.
